My dishwasher is making noises

It is quite common for a dishwasher to make noises. Hearing noises coming from your dishwasher does not mean that there is a serious issue.  Listen to what type of noise your machine is making and then refer to the advice below to try to resolve the issue.

  • My machine is making a beeping noise

Beeping or a small bit of music usually indicates that your dishwasher has moved from one part of the wash cycle to the next. A longer sequence of beeping or music means that your wash has finished.

  • My dishwasher is making a buzzing noise

Again a buzzing noise does not usually indicate a fault. When water is pumped out of your machine you can sometimes hear a buzzing noise. If the noise is very loud then it is worth just checking the water pump impeller for damage and the water pump sump for blockages. We have a guide to help you to do this.

  • My dishwasher is making a grinding noise

Grinding noises usually indicate that something has blocked the water pump impeller and is causing it to scrape as the impeller turns.

To fix this the item needs to be removed from the pump impeller or from inside the sump. First you need to remove the lower rack of the dishwasher, then the spray arm, then the filter cover and finally the filters. The pump impeller and the sump are found below the filter system at the bottom of the dishwasher. Use rubber gloves to fish around in the sump as sharp items can cut. Check the impeller turns correctly and remove any debris. Re-fit everything and you should be good to go.

  • My dishwasher is making a knocking or rattling noise

Knocking or rattling noises are also not usually a sign of a serious issue. These can be caused by the rotating spray arms hitting items in the wash (oven trays, utensils & larger items).

Also not loading enough items in the wash can result in the jets hitting the top of the metal wash tank and causing a knocking sound.

Items with not much weight can be bounced around by the water jets - small plastic items are particularly susceptible to this. Pack these items closer together or use dishwasher accessories to hold them down.
