If your machine vibrates and moves across the floor, it might be because it is sitting on the wrong surface. Wooden floors are not ideal. Try installing your machine on a water-resistant wooden board (at least 30mm thick) that has been screwed into the floor. If possible place your machine on a hard surface and in a corner to stop it moving.

Check that the transportation bolts have been removed from the back of your washing machine. If the machine is new or you have always had this problem, then this could be the issue. Use a spanner to remove the transportation bolts on the back of the machine and everything should work fine.

Washing machines that are not balanced can result in loud thumping or knocking sounds, especially when operating at high speeds. Check to see that the machine does not rock backwards and forwards. If it does then level using the adjustable feet. Best to use a spirit level to check everything is straight.

Heavy items or too many items in the wash can throw it off balance. Adding towels to the wash can even things out (make sure they are the right colour for the wash!). Also don't overfill the drum.

A dirty or blocked pump can also cause strange noises. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and unblock and clean the pump. This can usually be accessed through a panel on the front of the machine. When you unscrew the cover to access the pump, water may pour out so be prepared!
