Tumble Dryers – How to use them Safely and Effectively

Tumble dryers are a key appliance for many, owned by approximately 53% of UK households. However, they can be very expensive to run, and a lot of people have safety concerns associated with them, particularly the potential fire risks. A notable case is that of Whirpool, which announced in 2015 that it had a safety problem with its tumble dryers, which had caused 750 fires. As a result, 5.2 million tumble dryers were recalled.

If a tumble dryer is used correctly (and isn’t faulty), it is ultimately a safe appliance to have in the home. Which? has compiled a guide of steps to take in order to ensure that people are using their tumble dryers as safely and effectively as possible:

  1. Never overfill a tumble dryer

  2. Avoid stopping your tumble dryer mid-cycle

  3. Clean your tumble dryer's lint filter after every use

  4. Never leave your tumble dryer running when you're out or asleep

  5. Never dry anything with oil on it in a tumble dryer

  6. Clean your dryer's heat exchanger regularly
